INTRODUCTION
Beginnings are delicate things…
As I near the end of my first proper novel’s editing, I want to turn to a journal for its creation. And in the process, find a new story to tell. One filled with pit-falls, dramas and great expectations. So here, I will begin a journal describing the process of writing this novel. Things an inspiring writer might look out for, perhaps, or simply as an enjoyable experience like reading about the production of a favourite movie.
I will dedicate this ongoing journal to the development of ideas, working through research and multiple drafts and general techniques. I will discuss topics on finding and developing character, working with conflict and shaping plot. And in the pursuit of the moment of revelation that will add the emotional punch to your novel. As with techniques learned, I will also show the pitfalls and perils of each stage in the writing process.
As with many authors, my journey began in childhood. A passion for stories would consistently lead me to a study of narrative structures in films and novels. Then, in the construction of my own narratives, often inspired by scientific concepts, emotional beats or some abstract dreamscape. After maintaining my love as a background hobby, I returned to writing in 2016 with a new novel concept. And in 2021, I completed a BA Hon. in Creative Writing at Birkbeck College in London to help polish and expand my passion into thrilling new and unknown realms.
Below is a small list of topics I will touch upon, but I have no doubt there will be a great deal more to discuss:
- Ideas, Core Concepts & Themes,
- World Building & Exposition,
- Character Development & Perspective,
- Conflict & Drama,
- The Character’s Journey,
- Shaping the Plot,
- Defining Key Moments,
- Revelation & Finale.
While some “How To” guides might focus on the technicalities of prose, I feel this is something a prospective writer can determine for themselves. As too, the various laws and rules about the English language with its many pitfalls and complications. Instead, I want to focus attention on the creative aspect. How best to write action or horror, what is meant by conflict and why is it important, how best to start or end your book, scenes or chapters.
During this process, this journal will highlight the latest draft of my novel, and go into some detail about re-shaping a shallow story into a professional work. I will look to post as regularly as possible as I edit my completed novel.
So I welcome you on this journey. Let us do it together. I will look to be candid and concise. But please feel free to leave feedback or questions, and perhaps, together, we can start a dialogue as we delve into the mysterious and illuminating art of crafting a novel.
